Shotover Country Park
One of Oxford’s hidden gems and one that doesn’t have any “play equipment”. Shotover is just off the ring-road close to Risinghurst, and has a series of walks through the woodlands for the family to enjoy.
The short red route is the best for beginners and those with children – as half-way around this 45 minute walk is “the beach”, a semi-sandy spot where you can build dams in the small stream and have a picnic, there is a grassy area and many trees to climb.
There is a large car-park at the site but it does get busy particularly with dog walkers, something else to bear in mind if you have children who may be wary of dogs.
Tips – take wellies, some spades (for digging in the stream) – there are some hills to run down (and climb back up again!) – so be prepared for that with the smaller ones.
